Nevada

Nevada is one of the American states. Nevada means “covered in snow”. The state knows many mountain areas, with the top of Boundary Peak (4005 metres) as highest point in the desert. Nevada is the state with the least amount of rainfall of all the states. It’s a perfect state for nature lovers. You can choose to have a very active holiday here, but the state also offers enough to do for the less active travellers. The highlights: Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Reno and Lake Tahoe. 

Lake Tahoe 

Lake Tahoe is one of the biggest and deepest lakes in North America. The lake is famous for the clear water, and the gorgeous location between the mountains. Popular activities here are: paragliding, jet skiing or paddling in a canoe or kayak. There are rental places all around the lake. Pleasure cruises are very popular to during the summer. You can also go diving here, although only the more experienced divers can, since the lake is so deep. In the winter you can find skiing areas around Lake Tahoe. They are known for the beautiful environment, but also for the notorious snow storms. You can also make lovely hiking and biking trips around the lake. One of the most famous trails is the Tahoe Rim Trail. This trail is 270 kilometres long and goes all around the lake. West of Lake Tahoe is the Granite Chief Wilderness area located. Here you can go hiking and camping in the wild. 

Reno

About a half hour drive from Lake Tahoe is Reno located. This is the second largest gamble city in Nevada, after Las Vegas. Reno however, is also known for the gorgeous nature. It is located in a valley between two mountains, of which Mount Rose is the highest. This makes activities as hiking and mountain climbing a possibility here. Reno has a lively gamble and entertainment industry, gambling is legal here. 

Las Vegas 

Las Vegas in known for its entertainment. Las Vegas was founded in 1905 and in 1911 it became an official town. Las Vegas is mostly famous for its over-the-top hotels and casinos. You can recognize the city by the neon lights, which can be seen from a great distance in the surrounding desert. Nowadays Las Vegas is the biggest city in Nevada. If you don’t like heat it is best to avoid Las Vegas in the months May through September. The temperature can reach 47 degrees Celsius. Most hotels and casinos are located along the Strip, which is part of the Las Vegas Boulevard. 

Hoover Dam 

The Hoover Dam is a concrete curved dam. The build started in 1930 and the dam was finished in 1936. The dam was built to prevent floods from the melting snow from the Rocky Mountains. 
The reservoir behind the dam is called Lake Mead, named after Elwood Mead, who was the supervisor of the build. It is the fourth most visited national park in The United States. Annually about 8 to 10 million people visit the national park. It is definitely worth a visit! 

On Lake Mead many water sports can be done. The area around the lake has many inlets with cliffs and sand beaches. You could also spend your summer holiday here!
